Eric Fischl leaving Mary Boone Gallery after 30 years:

US artist wants to focus on his work as he expresses disappointment with the art market

No long lines at this museum on the Mall, but some of the most intriguing stuff to see. We entered through the Museum of International Art, which is literally a (very large) hole in the ground and worked our way up through the National Museum of African Art, where this piece is.  It houses a small but exquisite collection well worth the descent.

Physical presence

Given the plethora of digital images, what is it that moves people to possess a real object? Why is a drawing preferable to an indistinguishable scan? I understand why the existence of one would make it monetarily more valuable, but why would it be emotionally more valuable?  Is the object so tied to its price that that is the motivation for liking it?

I know, I know: Yes and no.

Ashe Laughlin: Payback

Laughlin does something very hard: He makes political art with a timeless quality. This piece is based on a news shot of riots in Tahrir Square. Using the colors of the Egyptian flag, Laughlin has made art with the same visceral appeal as Munch's Scream.

Dallas video artist Greta Poulsen’s work in “Pinched”  turns the process of animation on its head.  Instead of chaining many slightly different still images to create the illusion of motion, Poulsen starts with video footage and programs only the parts that move into individual frames.  The result is an entirely new take on the original sampled material—sort of “Nude Descending a Staircase” meets Jacques Derrida.
